Architecture and vision

The architectural vision is based on the idea to create a residential building with diversity and design that relates to the very special historical urban context in which it is located. The building will be a mediating element that occupies the transition from Korsgården along Møllehusvej to the green park space that connects the area with the large cultural-sports and leisure center located in the old military barracks.

Korsgården’s traditional linear block building has been broken up by dividing and displacing the facade so that it provides variety and small niches towards Møllehusvej. The lines of the facade are also parallel to the old barracks but at the same time, it connects to Møllehusvej by twisting the corners of the building.

The building is built in 3.5 stories, where the upper floor is a staggering saddle roof. The surface of the saddle roof is interrupted point by point by a dormer window and a retreat motif, that gives the roof variety and architectural expression. The dormer is used internally to achieve heights in thestaircase, allowing access to the upper floor, while the retreats are used as smaller roof terraces for the upper dwellings.

A human-scale area with private outdoor space and safety for children, in a location that has easy access to both the city center and main thoroughfares, characterize this building that becomes a natural link between the surrounding area and the Culture and Sports Center.

High-Quality facade architecture and materials with variety and texture, give the facades life and expression. The buildings have several shifts in the facade line, which helps to break the monotonous facade architecture and add individuality to each home. We imagine that the buildings are built in a reddish hue; the materials are inspired by the classic urban environment in the area around Kildegården, which thus contributes to an urban relationship. The buildings are intended to radiate the same weight and robustness as Roskilde’s older townhouses. The combination of the staggering saddle roof and the vertical division of the facade will adapt the building volume to a more human scale at street level. It gives the impression of a building consisting of several individual properties. Material and facade expression goes up on the roof so that the building will appear as a cohesive building body.

Each window niche and retraction in the roof is made with a slim metal frame in a copper-like shade that highlights the niche and makes the holes clear in the “heavy” facade. Balcony fronts are established in the same copper-like shade. In several places on the facade, wood is used in connection with window sections, to give texture, variety, and character. The choice of good, healthy, and long-lasting materials gives the building a long life with limited maintenance.

The architectural expression is a modern interpretation of the classic city center in Roskilde, adapted to future requirements for indoor climate, and the wishes and needs that a modern family has today.
