The ambition is to create a durable and healthy housing complex with high architectural character. This is achieved by proposing a distinctive building that opens up and integrates the city as well as its infrastructure via shared open spaces. The project will function as a lighthouse project for Hundige and the adjacent area – a clear point on the traffic nerves that connect the city, and a landmark for future healthy urban development. The project will help ensure safe urban spaces of significant quality where pedestrians feel safe and welcome, while at the same time insuring rational and optimized solutions to infrastructural conditions. This strategy will facilitate a boost for the entire area, which today is strongly characterized by a fast traffic flow and an urban space that can seem unsafe for vulnerable road users. The quality of the urban spaces must be transformed so that everyone feels welcome at any time during the day.
By offering the opportunity to stay and by being architecturally distinctive, the aim is to create a place and not ”just” a building.
Opening up to the city
The project is based on the desire to create a development that opens up to the surroundings, while at the same time generates intimate urban spaces. The site is defined by a predominantly infrastructural context on the North, the railway and bicycle/pedestrian bridge to the South and the connecting bridge crossing the site. This context influences the site in two orthogonal directions: along and across the site. At an architectural level, we have chosen to work with an angular orientation of the building in relation to the context. By doing so we create a way finding element and a variety of spacial experiences, that catch the eye an invites residents and citizens to experience a calm and safe urban space. At the same time, the angled facades comes as an added quality to the dwellings, by relating the context in a way where views and vistas are not cut off by the immediate context – you look from the dwellings along, across, over the footbridge, the station, the railway, the road, the portal and beyond, where the sky meets the forest and the water. The project thus integrates in a single architectural approach the many challenges given on the site.
Portal to Hundige
The projects distinctive architectural character is given by the sloping roof surfaces. In addition to emphasizing the desire for views and vistas from the individual dwellings, the variation in building height marks the area around Hundige Station, Waves and the Portal. It is the project team’s wish that the project will help lift the area and mark it visually as a portal – the access to Hundige. The architecture itself is carefully thought out so that the buildings furthest to South and North appear as towers and articulate the visual meeting with Hundige from the S-train and by car. Nonetheless, the buildings decrease in height closer to the portal, to ensure a natural relationship to the its height and geometry.
